Torres Mas La Plana 2018 Penedès, Spain
14.5% alcohol. This is Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Mas La Plana vineyard. It’s one of the older Cabernet Sauvignons from Spain, first planted by Torres in 1966. Initially, this was called Gran Coronas Black Label, and famously in 1979 the 1970 Black Label won the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad in Paris, fighting off competition from the likes of Latour and Haut-Brion. It’s a ripe, warm expression of Cabernet showing blackcurrant fruit with notes of olive and cured meat, as well as a hint of mint and some slight rubbery reductive hints. There’s a lot of power here. It’s fresh as well as being rich, with good tannins. Still quite youthful, give this wine a few years to show what it’s capable of. 93/100
