This is from Masi, the masters of appassimento (drying of grapes prior to fermentation) in Italy’s Veneto region. This ‘Brolo’ version of Campforin is given extra complexity by adding some Osoleta (a grape variety recovered by Masi) to the blend. Aged in small oak. In the UK this retails for c. £22, and is available in Tesco. I found this in the BA lounge.

Masi Brolo Campoforin 2021 Rosso Verona, Veneto, Italy
14% alcohol. This is nicely balanced: a full flavoured, dry red wine with nice intensity from the drying process, which ooomphs up flavours and also adds some new aromatics. Cherries, raspberries, tar and spice here with some blackcurrant notes too. It’s voluminous in the mouth with some fruit sweetness, and nice bitter notes of damson and some sour cherry. But it doesn’t feel heavy or overdone. Lovely balance is the key here. 93/100
