Eulogio Pomares and Zarate: amazing wines from Rías Baixas
Website: https://www.zarate.es/
Eulogio Pomares is making some of the best wines in Rías Baixas. He works with two labels: Zarate is the family property, while he also has a separate cellar where he makes wines under his own name. I tasted with Eulogio and Rebeca at Simplesmente Vinho in Porto, February 2026.
I’ve included a note on Sal da Terra, which is a collaborative project that I’m involved with, but it’s Eulogio’s wine, so I’ve scored it. But bear this conflict of interest in mind as you read.

Zarate Albariño 2025 Rías Baixas, Spain
This is really good, showing some pear, peach and lime fruit with a lovely acid line, and nice depth. Good ripeness and good acidity in tandem. 93/100

Zarate Balado 2024 Rías Baixas, Spain
Single vineyard, old vines, fermented and aged in stainless steel for six months. Rich, intense, textural. Really expressive with bold citrus and apricot notes. Seriously good. 94/100

Eulogio Pomares Castineiro 2024 Rías Baixas, Spain
From a coastal vineyard at Castrelo, this is fermented and aged in chestnut barrels and undergoes full malolactic. Powerful, showing great energy: saline, green apple, citrus drive. Real length here. 95/100

Eulogio Pomares Sal da Terra 2024 Rías Baixas, Spain
From two vineyards. Coastal, aged in chestnut; inland, aged in concrete. Richly aromatic but still fresh, powerful pear and peach and a spicy, saline undertow. Real precision. 95/100
