Luís Seabra Vinhos: impressive wines from Vinho Verde, Douro and Dão

Luis Seabra is one of Portugal’s leading winemakers. He made his name as winemaker for Niepoort, before leaving to set up his own project in 2013. Seabra’s idea was to make uncompromising wines: the sort he wanted to make, without thinking about what the market wants. He wanted to create authentic expressions of these regions. He sources grapes from top vineyards in the Douro, Vinho Verde and Dão. Winemaking is low intervention, with natural yeast ferments. All his reds are now 100% whole bunch, and he aims for low extraction, though leaves the wine on the skins for as long as 30 days, extracting very gently. These are wines of balance and finesse, and are worth seeking out.

Luís Seabra Xisto Illimitado 2024 Douro, Portugal
Transition soils. Stony and bright but with nice fleshy pear and peach notes. Textured and delicious. 93/100
Luís Seabra Granito Cru Alvarinho 2024 Vinho Verde, Portugal
Alvarinho from Melgaço in foudres. Nice reductive tension on the nose. Fresh but ripe crystalline citrus fruit with lovely depth and a salty twist to the finish. Beautiful. 95/100

Mainly Encruzado and some Bical and Cercial. Barrels. Bold and concentrated with beautifully integrated oak and nice texture. Such finesse here. 94/100

Single vineyard, transition soils. 600m mainly Rabigato. Barrel. Tight with lovely tension but also some sweet pear and peach fruit. Lovely depth but also focus. 95/100

Mourisco. Big berried variety. Lighter red. Perfumed with glacé cherry and pear, as well as stewed strawberry. Fun. 92/100
