Beaumes-de-Venise exploration: a big tasting of the reds and the Muscats

This was a great chance to look at a wide range of wines from this cru, beginning with the red wines and then going on to the Muscats.

14.5% alcohol. Supple, sweetly aromatic nose with cherries and raspberries. The palate is bright with some peppery framing and nice vivid acidity keeping things fresh. A juicy, slightly tart, lighter style that has a lot of drinkability. 90/100

Château La Croix des Pins Les Contreforts de Montmirail Beaumes de Venise 2024
15% alcohol. Organic, single vineyard. This has some pepper and herb complexity as well as ripe, slightly heady cherry and plum fruit. There’s quite a bit of spicy complexity here, bringing a savoury dimension to the sweet fruit. 92/100

Demoiselle Suzette Rouge Désir Beaumes de Venise 2024
14% alcohol. Nice concentration here with bold, sweet cherry and berry fruits with some spicy definition. Has some grippy tannin in the mix. Stylish and well balanced with nice intensity. 93/100

15% alcohol. 90% Grenache, 10% Syrah. This is really bright, fresh and peppery with nice mineral notes interleaving among the sweet, focused cherry and berry fruits. This has good definition and plenty of drinkability, despite the relatively high alcohol. 93/100

Domaine des Bernadins Beaumes de Venise 2024
14% alcohol. A blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 6% Marsanne, 5% Mourvèdre, 4% Grenache Blanc. Warmly aromatic with lovely pepper and herb complexity as well as ripe cherry fruit. The palate is fresh and complex with pepper, meat, herbs and sleek cherry and berry fruits. Real focus, depth and complexity here. 95/100

14.5% alcohol. Organic. 65% Grenache, 35% Syrah. Beautifully expressive nose with a fine peppery edge to the sweet berry fruits. The palate is elegant and expressive with nice dusty tannins providing a backbone, and a sense of freshness to the fruit. Juicy and expressive, this is really good. 94/100

14% alcohol. Organic. 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah. Slight meaty nose with some char notes, as well as bright berry fruits. The palate is vivid and substantial with rich berry and cherry fruit, with a spicy, structured finish. Rich style. 92/100

Domaine Raboly Clément V Beaumes de Venise 2024
14% alcohol. 1.5 hectares, 6000 vines, 8 tonnes of grapes. 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. Massal selection, raised in ancient barrels previously used for Muscat. This is nicely dense but also well balanced with a core of sweet blackberry and cherry fruit, with a slight saltiness and lovely peppery detail. Concentrated but refined with nice intensity and balance. 94/100

14% alcohol. Organic. 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. Juicy, vivid, supple cherry and raspberry fruit with some nice herbal hints. There’s a massive drinkability and freshness to this wine which has a lovely hint of wildness, while staying fully correct! This is really good. 94/100

14.5% alcohol. 90% Syrah, 10% Viognier. This is really good. It has a floral nose with a touch of apricot, some white pepper, and lovely black cherry fruit. The palate has a bit of grippy structure, but also lovely fresh fruit. So expressive and well balanced, with warmth but also definition. 95/100

15.5% alcohol. 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Viognier. Aromatic black fruits nose with a peppery, herby edge. Alluring and rich. The palate is rich and full with juicy, layered, textured fruit. Nice depth to this rich wine. 92/100

14.5% alcohol. Organic. 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah. This is fresh and vivid with appealing sweet black cherry and blackberry fruit, showing nice definition and finishing with a spicy flourish. Has some tannin. 92/100

15% alcohol. Half/half Grenache and Syrah. Juicy and sweetly aromatic with nice depth to the liquorice-laced berry and cherry fruit. Ripe but still in balance with a touch of warmth on the finish. Stylish. 92/100

14% alcohol. 75% Grenache, 25% Syrah. Organic. Really lively herb-laced, peppery raspberry fruit on the nose. The palate is peppery and herby with juicy cherry and berry fruits, and then a lovely dried herb and pepper savouriness. Fresh and expressive, and with massive drinkability. 94/100

14.5% alcohol. Organic. 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre. Bright and with nice energy, but also some meaty, spicy depth. Shows sweet cherry and berry fruit with nice intensity and a bit of grip on the finish. Lots of presence here. 93/100

Domaine de la Ferme Saint-Martin ‘Saint-Martin’ Beaumes de Venise 2023
14.5% alcohol. 95% Grenache, 5% Syrah, organic. Peppery, herby and spicy with some char and liquorice notes on the nose. The palate is meaty and spicy with a savoury twist to the bright berry fruits. Lovely detail to this wine: it’s quite intriguing. 93/100

Domaine de la Ferme Saint-Martin Les Terres Jaunes Beaumes de Venise 2023
13% alcohol. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Teret Noir, 5% Counoise. Organic. Complex, open, herby, peppery nose with some juicy red fruits. The palate is bright and expressive with lots of energy, bright cherry fruit, a touch of cranberry, and massive drinkability. This is quite lovely. A real outlier, but delicious and thought-provoking. 95/100

14.5% alcohol. Organic. From 300 m at the foot of Mont Ventoux, this is a blend of equal parts Syrah and Grenache. Juicy, peppery and a bit meaty, this shows ripe but well defined cherry and plum fruit with a touch of warmth, but always staying balanced and appealing. Slightly meaty on the finish. 93/100

14% alcohol. Organic. 50% Grenache, 50% Syrah. Rich, vivid, juicy and spicy with a subtle cured meat edge to the lush blackberry and cherry fruit. Nice definition to this wine, with some structure and spice on the finish. 93/100

Domaine Les Goubert Beaumes de Venise 2023
14.5% alcohol. Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, organically farmed. Leather, herbs and spice on the nose, as well as bright, ripe berry fruits. The palate is intriguing, with brightness and a sense of lightness, but also some rich, sweet fruit. There’s a herbal twist and even a touch of mint. The Cinsault seems to be delivering something here in terms of lightness and texture, but also the fruit profile. Beautiful. 95/100

15% alcohol. From Trias: gypsum and red clay soils at 300 m. Lovely aromatics of pepper-laden cherry fruits. Nice weight on the palate, which is rich and concentrated but well balanced with lovely sweet cherry and berry fruit. Quite textured. A bit of warmth on the finish, but overall really good – and it’s great to see the soils taking centre stage. 94/100

14.5% alcohol. Grey Jurassic clays. Rich, sweetly fruited, spicy and peppery on the nose. Enticing. The palate is very bold with some chocolate, herbs, meat and spice as well as dense cherry and berry fruits. Forward and enticing, with some structure, too. 93/100

14.5% alcohol. Supple, light, and warmly fruited with some dried herbs as well as sweet red cherry fruit. Nice definition here. This has an ease to it, and it’s very drinkable. 92/100

14.5% alcohol. 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre. This is warm, spicy and fruity, with a nice combination of sweet berry fruits, some floral cherry and herb detail, and a bit of grainy structure. Drinking very well now, this is a warmly satisfying red wine. 92/100

13% alcohol. 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 15% Teret Noir, 10% Counoise. Expressive, vivid, very spicy and very peppery with bright wild strawberry and cherry fruit with nice herbal hints and good structure and acidity. This is a brilliantly expressive wine that has massive drinkability, plus some seriousness, too. 94/100

15% alcohol. 70% Syrah, 30% Grenache. There’s a lovely ripe fruit quality to the nose, which shows sweet cherries. The palate is rounded and sweetly fruited, with some nice peppery hints and also a touch of bitterness from the alcohol. But this is drinking very nicely now. 93/100

14.5% alcohol. 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Cinsault. Delightfully peppery and expressive with some strawberry and cherry fruit, a bit of sweetness to the palate, and a sense of elegance and drinkability. I think the Cinsault has had a very positive influence on this blend. Quite lovely. 94/100

14.5% alcohol. This comes from 500 m, and it’s a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Viognier. Lively and fresh with some sweet berry fruits as well as wet stone minerality and wild herbs and pepper. Beginning to develop and mellow a little, this is getting a little wild in a good way. 92/100

14.5% alcohol. 95% Syrah, 5% Viognier. This is sweetly aromatic with apricot, cherry and pepper notes, and then some warm, sweet, stewed strawberry on the palate. Softening and losing definition with age, it’s very appealing but I suspect it would have been a bit brighter and more focused younger. 91/100

15% alcohol. Full golden colour. Aged in a new barrel, this is very woody and spicy, with a minty, cedary edge to the sweet fruit. It’s an unusual take on Beaumes de Venise, and I’m not sure about it: the wood really dominates. But some might really love this style! 88/100
