Highlights: Kolonia 52 Bleu de Hongrie 2023 Balaton, Hungary

This is a really interesting Hungarian red, made from Kekfrankos, aka Blaufränkisch. The name translates as Hungarian Blue (it’s French) referring to Blaufränkisch (‘Blue French’). It comes from the Pécsely vineyard in Sentio Birtok, which is on the shores of Balaton and has volcanic soil. These are farmed organically by a local grower. The fermentation is whole cluster with some foot stomping. Maturation in 600 litre oak. Natural, with no added sulfites.

12% alcohol. Juicy and bright with lovely redcurrant and cherry notes as well as good acidity and some spice. Vibrant and grainy with a delicious savouriness and a tart sour cherry finish. Grainy and delicious. So drinkable. 93/100 (UK stockist: Newcomer)
