Domaine Colombet: impressive wines from Saint Joseph in the northern Rhône

Website: https://domainecolombet.fr/

Nicolas Colombet is an eighth-generation winegrower, farming 6 hectares of vines at the Condrieu-adjacent border of the Saint Joseph appellation in the Northern Rhône. Working organically on granitic soils, the results are really impressive: these are lovely wines.

Domaine Colombet Cuvée des Acacias 2024 Collines Rhodaniennes, Northern Rhône, France
This is Marsanne, matured for 8 months in tank. Fresh, pure, light and linear with lovely precision and texture. 92/100

Domaine Colombet Viognier 2024 Collines Rhodaniennes, Northern Rhône, France
This spends 18 months in tank, and it’s Condrieu in all but name. Lovely floral aromatics of apricot and pear. The palate is taut and elegant but still has that beautiful, slightly exotic Viognier character. 94/100

Domaine Colombet Saint Joseph Blanc Promesse 2023 Northern Rhône, France
From Roussanne and Marsanne planted in 2018, with the former raised in oak, the latter in tank. Lovely texture here. Fresh, direct but layered with citrus, pear and peach fruit. Very fine. 93/100

Domaine Colombet Cabanes 2023 Collines Rhodaniennes, Northern Rhône, France
This is Gamay! And it’s brilliant. Lovely floral red fruits on the nose. Expressive and fine. The palate is salty and bright showing pure red cherry fruit and some redcurrant freshness. 94/100

Domaine Colombet Combes 2023 Collines Rhodaniennes, Northern Rhône, France
Syrah from three plots, raised in tank. It’s a lovely floral, slightly meaty expression of this variety. Direct and pure with linear blackberry and raspberry fruit, with peppery detail. Quite brilliant. 94/100

Domaine Colombet Saint Joseph Réminiscence 2023 Northern Rhône, France
This has 12 months in oak, then another 8 months in tank. Peppery and elegant with lovely textured black fruits and some mineral notes. Spicy and robust with lovely weight. 94/100
