Nanclares y Prieto, beautiful wines from Rías Baixas

I tasted these wines at Simplesmente Vinho in Porto in February 2026 with Alberto Nanclares (pictured above). He started this winery in the late 1990s a few years after he’d moved to Castrelo. An economist, he’d bought a house with vineyards, and then decided to make wine. After using an enologist he turned to making the wines himself, and also farming in a less interventionist way. The Prieto in the name is from Sylvia Prieto, a consultant who’d worked with Alberto and who became a partner in the project a decade ago. They make beautifully pure, expressive wines both from their own vineyards and also those of grower partners. The whites are brilliant, and while the reds are good I think a less oxidative winemaking approach might suit them better.

Nanclares y Prieto Blanco 2024 Rías Baixas, Spain
Albariño from lots of different plots, almost all in stainless steel. Nice presence: bright and pithy with good acidity under the lively citrus fruit. 92/100

Whole cluster foot trodden and macerated for 2 days, then pressed to chestnut barrels. Saline and dry with some pithy character. Nice salinity and weight here, showing lovely balance. Fine and characterful. 94/100
