Impressed by this Pinot from a region in South Africa that isn’t well known for it.
Cecilia Pinot Noir 2024 Ceres, South Africa
13% alcohol. This is a really interesting expression of Pinot Noir, from Ceres, which is an elevated plateau (700-100 m) inland, just above Worcester and immediately east of Tulbach. It reminds me a bit of an elegant Nebbiolo, rather than Pinot, but that’s probably the terroir speaking. Fresh, aromatic and taut on the nose with redcurrant and bloody notes, as well as some red cherry. The palate has elegance and freshness with tapering red cherry and redcurrant fruit, as well as some fine spice, showing good acidity but also some grippy, yet refined tannin. There’s a slight drying on the finish which makes me think of Nebbiolo. Such a lovely expression of Pinot Noir with a point of difference.
