It’s encouraging to see fresher, more vital, terroir-style wines from Rioja. This was good.
Ramōn Bilbao Viñedos de Altura 2016 Rioja Crianza, Spain
14% alcohol. A blend of equal parts Tempranillo from Rioja Alta and Garnacha from Rioja Baja. It’s a really fresh yet intense wine showing some attractive spicy oak that integrates beautifully with vivid, floral, ripe cherry, plum and blackberry fruit. It’s rich and autumnal with a warming finish, but it stays fresh all the way. 92/100 (£15.50 Great Western Wine, Harrisons Fine Wines, The Bottle List, Excel Wines)
