Domaine de Thalie: characterful organic wines from the Mâconnais, Bourgogne

Peter Gierszewski created Domaine de Thalie, in the Mâcon region of Bourgogne, a decade ago. He now has 4.5 hectares of vines and is turning out some very interesting wines.

The domaine is based in the hills above Cluny, home to the famous Abbey, in the northwest of the Mâcconias. Farming is organic, and Peter values biodiversity.

The aspect is facing due west, and there are a variety of soils, with some granite as well as the clay/limestone and marly clay that are more typical of Bourgogne. They grow four varieties: as well as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, there’s also Syrah and Gamay.

Domaine de Thalie ‘Atout Vent’ 2018 Mâcon-Bray, Bourgogne
Clay/limestone soils, 400 m altitude, fermented and matured in stainless steel. 12.5% alcohol. This is fine and delicate with a lovely mineral edge to the citrus fruit. It has nice detail and precision, with good purity and fine acidity. 91/100

Domaine de Thalie ‘Les Pierres Levées’ Blanc 2018 Mâcon-Bray, Bourgogne
Fermented and matured in 500 litre barrels. Marne soils. This has nice tension with good acidity, some minerality and real finesse. Slightly salty and mineral with good precision and a bit of structure. 93/100

Domaine de Thalie Plutonic 2018 IGP Saône et Loire, France
This is made from Syrah and Gamay vines in Cluny, and the blend is 50/50. Gamay is whole bunch while the Syrah is destemmed. They are co-fermented, and no barrels are used. Short maceration. Floral and bright and supple with lovely juicy cherries and plums. Shows real finesse with a hint of pepper and astonishing drinkability. 93/100

Domaine de Thalie ‘Les Pierres Levées’ Rouge 2018 Mâcon-Bray, Bourgogne
This is from 60 year old Gamay vines planted on Marne soils. It’s 100% whole bunch and is matured in 500 litre barrels. Nice purity and intensity with real finesse, and lovely cherry and raspberry fruit. Great precision and focus with a nice acid line, showing freshness and purity. 93/100

Domaine de Thalie Balancin Pinot Noir 2018 Bourgogne, France
From argile calcaire soils this is whole bunch fermented and spends a year in barrel. Juicy, fresh and stony with lovely elegance as well as fresh cherry and raspberry fruit. Quite serious. Fresh with good acidity. 92/100
