Highlights: Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard HJW Bio Riesling 2017 Finger Lakes

Wiemer is one of the top producers in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. This Riesling comes from the HJW-4 block of the Wiemer HJW vineyard. In 2014 this was the block used as a trial for biodynamic farming, using vines planted in 2009. The experiment has been a success and the trial has been rolled out to other blocks in the vineyard. Currently in the process of Demeter certification, so it can’t be called biodynamic. Just 3 g/l residual sugar here, but it tastes sweeter because of the generous, ripe fruit.

12.5% alcohol. This is lovely. It’s a concentrated, complex dry Riesling, but despite the flavour intensity, there is no harshness here. There’s some pear and apple richness, but the core is generous, linear lemony fruit with a nice crystalline structure. Really harmonious with good texture and just a hint of sweetness, but the main drive here is the fine, supple, generous fruit. Beautifully expressive, this is one of the best Finger Lake Rieslings I’ve tried. 94/100
