Highlights: Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis 2017 Toscana, Italy
Gaja Ca’Marcanda Promis 2017 Toscana, Italy
14% alcohol. This is from Gaja’s Tuscan estate in the Maremma, which they bought in 1996, with the first wine released in 2000. They have 80 hectares here, and it’s Italy’s new world, with international varieties to the fore. This is a blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Syrah and 10% Sangiovese. But the interesting thing is that it still tastes Tuscan. This is bright and focused with taut blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, together with a hint of tar and good acidity. It’s quite a serious wine, showing good structure and intensity, and will likely develop well. It’s a little compressed now with nice taut fruit and some grippy tannins: this is what you want in a young fine red wine. 94/100 (UK retail between £30-40, available from Hedonism, Noble Green, Fareham Wine Cellar)
