Highlights: Altano Organic 2019 Douro, Portugal
Don’t see many organic wines from the Douro, but here’s a good one, at an affordable price point. It’s from the Vilariça Valley in the Douro Superior where the Symingtons have quite a lot of vineyards.
Altano Organic Red 2019 Douro, Portugal
14% alcohol
£11 Waitrose, Tanners, Davy’s
The Symingtons have over 100 hectares of organic vineyards in the Douro Superior subregion, the warmest and least steep bit of the region, which makes them the largest organic producers in the Douro. This is a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz. It has lovely floral aromatics of sweet black cherries and blackberries with some notes of olives and fine green herbs. The palate is really fresh and focused with good tannins and acidity, and lovely supple black fruits, with some tar and olive hints. Very fresh and drinkable, this is a lovely wine, showing brightness that would be so easy to lose to jamminess in this warm region. Tremendous value at this price. 92/100
