At the end of the month, Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa hosts one of the wine world’s most exciting events. It’s the second edition of the Wine Pinnacle Awards, first held in 2019.
Running over five days from 28 October to 1 November 2022, this exclusive celebration of the world’s best wines will include a series of masterclasses, a wine industry symposium and a range of wine-focused dinners prepared by some of the planet’s top chefs. The highlight of the event is the prestigious wine awards ceremony, which features 52 nominated wineries over 18 different categories.
This is an award with a difference. Rather than charging entry fees, or putting the responsibility for entering on the wineries, the winners are chosen in a process that means that even the world’s most highly regarded fine wines – made by producers who have no incentive to enter a competition – are included. The list of winning wines from the last Wine Pinnacle Awards testifies to that.
These awards represent the opinions of 61 jury members from 18 different countries – consisting of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, wine professionals and luminaries. These judges were selected by a high-calibre five-member Technical Committee chaired by Jeannie Cho Lee, and including Andreas Larsson, Doug Frost, Kenichi Ohashi and Oz Clarke – all names very familiar to wine professionals worldwide. Their first task was to establish the 18 award categories, and then to select the panel of jury members, making sure there is a focus on diversity, quality and merit.
Each member of the jury votes up to 9 times for each category, and from this, the top 3 nominees in each are selected. These shortlisted wineries are invited to the awards ceremony in Singapore, where the winners will be announced.
‘Wine Pinnacle Awards is a distinguished wine awarding process with the judges being especially selected for their extensive experience and deep level of expertise,’ says committee chair Jeannie Cho Lee. ‘I have been part of numerous wine awards, but none have this special nominating process which goes beyond wines just being submitted to be tasted and judged; Wine Pinnacle Awards includes and embraces wines from everywhere around the world without restrictions.’
