The wines of Kershaw: a champion of single-site and even single-clone wines from Elgin, South Africa
Website: https://www.kershawwines.com/
Richard Kershaw is a British ex-pat and MW who has been making his own wines out of Elgin for a few years now. Previously he was winemaker at Mulderbosch. Richard has received lots of critical acclaim for his Chardonnays, and has been pivotal in leading the current Elgin Chardonnay crusade. He’s also making really good Syrah and Pinot Noir. As well as his own wines, Richard is currently making the wines at Lothian in Elgin.
A while back he made a bold statement when he released a three-pack of ‘deconstructed’ Chardonnays, which sold for for 2400 Rand. 250 bottles each of these wines were produced, and they specify the clone and the soil type. There’s a similar three-pack of desconstructed Syrah, too.
He also makes a range called GPS which is for parcels of grapes that take his interest which are from outside Elgin. This stands for ‘grape positioning system.’
I asked Richard about his inspiration for the single-site wines:
