The wines of Piedra Fluida, a relatively new and interesting producer from Tenerife

Tenerife has been making some great wines of late, and here’s another good producer, new to me, from the island. They have the claim to fame that they have the highest vineyards in Europe, at 1687 metres!

They have a sizeable 26 hectares of vines on volcanic soils, and the first vintage was as recently as 2018.

Piedra Fluida Blanco 2022 Tenerife
Listan Banco (aka Palomino) from two sites in Granadilla de Abona on the southern slopes of Mt. Teide: Los Frontones (1687 m), and Cruz de Tea (950 m). Ungrafted vines 80+ years old. Wild ferment, half in foudre and half stainless steel. Fresh, taut and mineral with nice lemony fruit, showing precision and vitality, with lemony acidity. 91/100

Piedra Fluida Los Frontones Blanco 2021 Tenerife
100 year old Listan Blanco from Europe’s highest vineyard, fermented and matured in foudre. Mineral and taut with fine spices and notes of pear and peach. Salty with some nuttiness, and lovely weight, finishing spicy. 93/100

Piedra Fluida Listán Negro 2020 Tenerife
This is Listán Negro. Very fine, supple and elegant with nice sweet cherry and raspberry fruit with a mineral, stony undercurrent. Sweetly fruited, and finishes dark and savoury. 94/100

Piedro Fluida Vidal 2020 Tenerife
This is Listán Negro from a single vineyard at 600 m, on terraces. Stony, fresh and mineral with nice purity and drinkability. This has a linear finish with nice precision  and some iron hints. Very fine. 94/100

Piedro Fluida Ojitos 2020 Tenerife
This is a single vineyard Listan Negro from a plot at 600 m, steeply sloped. Smoky, mineral nose with fine spices and gravelly detail. Brooding palate with a charcoal edge to the cherry fruit. Linear and direct, and really fine. 95/100
