The wines of Quinta de Tourais, Douro, Portugal
Website: https://www.quintadetourais.com/en/index.html
Tourias is located in the Baixo Douro, the first part of the Douro you come to when heading from Porto, and this is the cooler, wetter part of the region. The Quinta is found in front of the town of Regua, on the other side of the river.
I tasted these wines with the owner, Fernando Coelho (pictured above), who also looks after the vineyard and makes the wines. His grandfather bought the estate from Ramos Pinto in 1927, but until 1999 all the grapes were sold to Port companies. Fernando, who had worked in restaurants, decided he’d like to make some wine, so after studying at Vila Real, he began making wine from his own grapes in 1999. Only 15 000 bottles are produced each year.
The packaging is quite distinctive, and the wines are full of personality and character. I tasted these wines with Fernando at Simplesmente Vinhos in 2025.

Quinta de Tourais Miura Curtimenta 2023 Douro, Portugal
This skin-fermented white is bright and fresh with some elegance to it. There’s just a bit of structure and some green apple and lemon fruit, as well as a hint of marmalade. 93/100

Quinta de Tourais LiliPop Branco 2024 Douro, Portugal
This is a tank sample. Viosinho and Arinto are the grapes. Skin contact in clay then six months in barrel. Lovely lime, spice and mandarin fruit, and even some peach. Spicy and a bit grippy with nice complexity and good acidity. There’s a bit of structure here and a saline twist. 94/100

Quinta de Tourais Miura MC 2023 Douro, Portugal
This is made from two rare old varieties growing in the middle of old vineyards. 300 bottles produced. It’s a lighter red with lovely purity and focus, showing sweet strawberries and cherries, with a hint of herbiness. Finishes stony. 93/100\

Quinta de Tourais Baga 2022 Douro, Portugal
Rare to see a varietal Baga in the Douro! Fresh and pure with bright raspberry and cherry fruit. Such a supple, pure wine with good tannins and acidity. Baga is naturally high yielding here. 92/100

Quinta de Tourais LiliPop Tinto 2022 Douro, Portugal
This is mainly Tinto Cão. Grippy and vibrant with nice sweet raspberry and cherry fruit. Firm but with vibrant fruit, showing lovely balance. 94/100

Quinta de Tourais Miura NV Douro, Portugal
A blend of 2021, 2022 and 2023, mainly Touriga Franca. Supple and complete with sweet cherries and raspberries, showing some tannic grip. There’s a wide dynamic range here with vibrant berry fruits and a grippy finish. 94/100
Quinta de Tourais Tinto 2022 Douro, Portugal
Juicy, vivid and crunchy with supple fruit. Light and expressive with a savoury twist. Lots to like about this. 93/100
