Yarra Valley (7) Timo Meyer

Website: https://timomayer.com.au/

Timo Meyer originally came from Germany, but for a long time now he’s been making some of the Yarra’s most interesting wines. He studied wine at Wagga Wagga and then established his own winery in 2000, after gaining experience at other wineries in the Yarra.

This is old-school-style Yarra, made in a low intervention style. On his website (just a single page, no links) Timo boasts of not doing back labels or barcodes. I quite like the retro chic, and the front labels are great.

Timo Meyer Chardonnay 2022 Yarra Valley, Australia
Whole bunch pressed and fermented in old oak with no added yeasts, and then spends 6 months finishing off in stainless steel. Vivid with nice energy and tart acidity. Juicy and refined with lovely balance. 94/100

Timo Mayer Chardonnay 2023 Yarra Valley, Australia
13% alcohol. I really like this. Bright and focused with great energy and linear citrus fruit, with a nice mineral streak. Stony, bright, pure and vivid, with good acidity. 94/100

Timo Meyer Close Planted Pinot Noir 2022 Yarra Valley, Australia
Some whole bunch here and even a little new oak. Supple, fine and textured with sour cherries, plums and a bright, sweet core of fruit. Very expressive, and slightly salty on the finish. Fine, appealing. 94/100

Timo Meyer Doktor Pinot Noir 2022 Yarra Valley, Australia
100% whole bunch, 10 d carbonic, then macerated. Juicy and lively, with some leafy notes fringing sweet raspberry, strawberry and cherry fruit. Very fine, made in an elegant style, with nice green hints and some grip. 95/100

Timo Meyer Merlot 2022 Yarra Valley, Australia
100% whole bunch. Black cherries, blackberries and blackcurrant. Very expressive with nice green hints and some chalkiness. Lovely flesh here but also some freshness. Juicy and fine. 94/100

Timo Meyer Cabernet 2023 Yarra Valley, Australia
Whole bunch, from Coldstream. Fresh blackcurrant and cherry fruit with nice weight, and core of sweet fruit. Some black cherry with lovely fruit. This has some crunch. 94/100

Timo Meyer Syrah 2022 Yarra Valley, Australia
Whole bunch. Peppery and vital, with a lovely sweet core of fruit. Juicy black cherries with some tar, spice and black pepper character, as well as nice tannic structure. This is lovely, and it’s also quite serious. 95/100

Older notes:

Timo Mayer Cabernet 2020 Yarra Valley, Australia
13.5% alcohol. This is beautiful, with some notes of gravel, spice and tar, as well as sweet blackcurrant fruit. So brooding and aromatic. The palate has freshness but also a luxurious texture with some green notes really nicely integrated into the sweet fruit, with a fine, spicy finish. This is a beautiful expression of Cabernet: ripe, but nuanced with such a luxurious mouthfeel. 94/100 (11/21)

Timo Meyer Gamay 2018 Yarra Valley, Australia
This is rounded, smooth and textural with sweet, liqueur-like cherry fruit, and a delicate spicy framing. It’s ripe and rounded, with some warmth, but also a twist of sappy greenness adding freshness and interest. There’s a touch of olive and mint savouriness, too. Compelling Aussie expression of Gamay. 93/100 (03/20)
