Tenerife winery Altos de Trevejos starts a new phase with Borja Pérez as winemaker

We crossed from the north, via the Teide national part, to the south of Tenerife. Here you can find something rather unusual for this island: a relatively large vineyard. It’s in the Albona appellation (one of five in Tenerife) which goes up to a lofty 1600 m, and the 20 hectares of vines are at 1300 m. We met with owner Henrique Alfonso, and Borja Pérez who has just started making the wines with the 2025 vintage.

Compared to the green north, it’s very dry here. Typically they get 200 mm of rain a year, and usually the only treatment the vines need is some elemental sulfur.

The soils here are arenas negras – black sands from a volcanic eruption in 1706. Grape varieties are Listán Blanco, Albillo Criollo, Verdelho, Malvasia Aromatico, Listán Prieto, Baboso Negro and Vijarejo Negro.

Borja has got involved with the viticulture in his debut year as winemaker, changed the approach (no more blending, all the varieties kept separate) and he feels that he still needs to fine tune the viticulture of the reds. But I thought all the wines were pretty spectacular.

These were all cask samples. The wines will be bottled in a few months. 2025 was a warm, dry year with 200 mm rain. 2026, an atypically damp year, has seen 400 mm rain so far.

Altos de Trevejos Listán Blanco 2025 Albona, Tenerife, Spain
Two 500 litre barrels, one new. Bright, linear, stony and pure. Lovely citrus fruit drive. Mineral, crystalline and quite saline, with high acidity. This is beautiful. 95/100
Altos de Trevejos Verdelho 2025 Albona, Tenerife, Spain
One new 500 litre barrel. Some smoky notes on the nose. Crystalline palate with smoky grapefruit character, some pear, and some bright citrus notes. Juicy, grainy and quite fine. 94/100
Altos de Trevejos Albillo Criollo 2025 Albona, Tenerife, Spain
This variety comes from La Palma. Fermented and aged in a 500 litre Stockinger barrel. Full yellow in colour. Pungent and vibrant on the nose. The palate is crystalline, spicy and vivid with pear, peach and melon fruit. It’s rich but there’s also freshness, and some lovely salinity alongside the chalky texture. 95/100
Altos de Trevejos Malvasia Aromatica 2025 Albona, Tenerife, Spain
Borja Pérez thinks that this is the best of the white varieties in the Canaries. Smoky and spicy, with a mineral nose. Intense, lively, stony on the palate with lovely citrus drive. Delicate structure under the fruit with amazing presence. So intense and crystalline. 95/100
Altos de Trevejos Listán Prieto 2025 Albona, Tenerife, Spain
Fermented whole bunch, 20 day maceration, then MLF in barrel. Vivid, juicy cherry and raspberry fruit with nice brightness and some crunch. This is fresh and supple with green hints in the background, some raspberry crunch, and nice tension. 94/100
Altos de Trevejos Baboso Negro 2025 Albona, Tenerife, Spain
This is still quite a rare variety and most wineries only have a bit. Trevejos have a significant 2.5 hectare holding. This is supple with nice concentration of ripe black cherry fruit. This is really expressive with some flesh and then some chalky tannins, finishing with some grip. Lovely. 94/100
Altos de Trevejos Vijarejo Negro 2025 Albona, Tenerife, Spain
This is another name for Sumoll. Nice intensity here: vivid and grippy with lovely black fruit intensity and good structure. Fresh but firm. 93/100
