Bordeaux 2024 vintage in bottle, assessing 100 of the top wines from this tricky vintage
Once again, a chance to look through the latest Bordeaux vintage courtesy of the Union des Grands Crus at their annual London tasting. It was the turn of 2024.
I avoid the primeurs each year because I don’t see too much value in tasting barrel samples and then writing extensive notes. You aren’t seeing the final wine, you will probably be tasting a blend that has been prepared specially for the occasion and aged in fancy barrels, and unless you are a winemaker you will have very limited experience of seeing a baby wine progress to become a bottled wine.
Still, lots of the trade and press spend quite a bit of time in Bordeaux each year joining this circus and writing extensively about these barrel samples as if they were the real, finished wine. The scores given at this early stage creates an anchoring effect that may be misleading, and the system also favours the established top producers. Rather than take part in the UGC tasting, a bunch of fancy producers insist you come to them. Everything is tasted sighted. It makes it hard for a ‘lesser’ producer doing really good work to get recognized.
The only time I’ll taste and write about the new vintage is very occasionally when producers bring samples to the UK, but then I hope I’m giving a strong caution that these are just samples, not finished wines. So the UGC tasting is normally my first look at the wines from a new vintage. It’s still a challenge looking at so many wines in close proximity, but it’s a great chance to take a deep dive into the latest releases. My impression of the 2024 vintage is that there are some fine wines, but it isn’t a great one. The reds are, on the whole, classically proportioned, perhaps on the lighter side, and where producers have recognized the vintage and extracted accordingly (without trying to make the wines bigger) the results should provide some lovely drinking in the medium term.
It was a very difficult vintage, one of the hardest in recent years, but many of these wines are delicious. At the right price they are worth buying, but they won’t go up in price so there’s no hurry to tuck in.
For Bordeaux, this was definitely the wrong vintage at the wrong time, but many châteaux have risen above the challenges and made some smart wines. And the whites are really good.
