Restaurants: an amazing tasting menu at AngloThai, London

A beautiful confluence of flavours, aesthetics and spot on service at AngloThai, complemented by a banging wine list.

My first time at AngloThai this week. I’d met owners John and Desiree Chantarasak at an event at The Barbary a while back, so it was on my radar. John is half English/half Thai, hence the name, and this Michelin-starred restaurant opened its doors in November 2024 after many appearances as a pop-up, beginning in 2015.

The dining room is beautiful, and quite serene. Cleverly installed cork baffling in the ceiling looks decorative, but helps with keeping the noise down.

This is a tasting menu restaurant, and in the evenings it is £115 per head. This is not a cheap eat, but we loved it. The pace of the meal, the level of service, and the quality and imagination of the dishes is almost perfect.

The wine list needs a mention, because it has character and is really well thought out. There’s a strong emphasis on English wine, both fizzy and still. And there’s also strong Austrian representation. This is a gem of a list, although befitting to the fact that this is a Michelin-starred restaurant in a central London location, if feels slightly on the expensive side.

We drank a glass of the Langham Culver Classic, a beautiful English sparkling wine from one of the country’s top producers. I was tempted by a bottle from natural wine producer Woodfine, but in the end went for the Bonsai from Claus Preisinger in Austria’s Burgenland. This was a good choice: bright, refreshing, sappy and aromatic.

AngloThai is a destination restaurant. It would be wrong to think of it as a Thai restaurant, although there is a very strong influence with the flavours and the spicing. It’s unique. Everything is done brilliantly.
