Highlights: Waitrose No 1 Don Gaspar Dry Amontillado by Lustau
I bought this Amontillado for a special recipe (to cook with) but it’s actually seriously good. I feel bad using it in cooking, when it’s a fine wine in its own right. Currently on offer at Waitrose. If I ever fell on hard times, I’d lean heavily on Sherry for my gastronomic drink hits. You can get really good examples at very reasonable prices still.
Waitrose No 1 Don Gaspar Dry Amontillado Sherry NV Spain
18% alcohol. This is made for Waitrose by Lustau, and it’s remarkably affordable for such a delicious wine. It has a beautifully complex nose with honey, tar, old wood, and some tangy citrus on the nose. It’s dry on the palate but with some richness, offering tangy, savoury, spicy notes alongside some crystalline citrus fruit. It offers amazing depth and complexity for the price. This is just beautiful and layered, with plenty of evolution and complexity. Warm, spicy and rich. 92/100 (£11.50 Waitrose, on offer from £14.50)
