Millton Crazy by Nature wines: Cosmo Red and Sirius White
I’ve visited James and Annie Millton – biodynamic pioneers in New Zealand’s Gisborne region – a few times now. Here’s an account of one particularly memorable visit, and here’s an account of the first. This pair of wines really impressed.
Millton Crazy by Nature Cosmo Red 2017 Gisborne, New Zealand
13% alcohol. This is a blend of Malbec, Syrah and Viognier from biodynamically farmed vineyards. Wildly aromatic with notes of pepper (so much pepper!), black cherries, cloves and a touch of apricot. The palate is fresh and grainy, with some dark gravelly notes, lots of pepper, and juicy cherry and berry fruits. Has amazing freshness and drinkability, and also a nice savoury side. Millton Crazy by Nature Sirius White 2019 Gisborne, New Zealand
13% alcohol. A blend of Chardonnay, Viognier and Marsanne. It’s a really interesting wine, with a touch of matchstick on the nose as well as mandarin, lemon jelly and lime. The palate is fresh but has fruity depth to it, with keen acidity providing a foil to the crystalline citrus fruit. Subtle hints of wax and white pepper add interest to the spicy, tapering finish. A really attractive wine with a distinctive character.
