Highlights: Champagne Bruno Paillard NPU 2014

This is a really serious high-end Champagne from Bruno Paillard. NPU stands for Nec Plus Ultra. It’s an extra brut and the base wine is half Chardonnay, half Pinot Noir from the Grand Crus of Oger, Chouilly, Mailly and Verzenay, fermented in small oak. It was blended in 2005 and disgorged in September 2017.

Champagne Bruno Paillard NPU Extra Brut 2004 France
This is fabulous with intense notes of toast, spice, pears and peach as well as oyster shell, cashew and hazelnut, with a touch of cherry. This is vinous with amazing pear, toast and spice notes. Mineral with some richness and precision. One of the people drinking with me describes it as ‘Krug with stilletos’. Lovely finesse and tension. 96/100
