Video and notes: tasting five Ports from Ramos Pinto

Jamie Goode tastes five ports from Ramos Pinto: white, 20 year old tawny, LBV and then the 1995 and 1997 vintage Ports.

Notes are below:

Ramos Pinto Adriano White Port Reserva NV Douro, Portugal
19.5% alcohol. This is golden coloured. It’s really sweet and rounded and a bit nutty with some raisin and baked apple character. Rounded and smooth with nice concentration, and some notes of almond on the finish. 90/100

Ramos Pinto RP20 Quinta do Bom Retiro 20 Year Old Tawny NV Douro, Portugal
20.5% alcohol. This is rich, warm, spicy with a good concentration of rich raisin and cherry fruit. It’s very intense but it has some harmony, and is quite elegant. Captures a lovely tension between the rich, spicy, raisiny, casky notes and the plum and cherry fruit. Intense and rich, and quite sweet. 93/100

Ramos Pinto RP.LBV Unfiltered 2015 Douro, Portugal
19.5% alcohol. This has good concentration of black cherry and blackberry fruit, with good tannic structure and notes of spice and pepper. It’s grainy and grippy, with the structure making it seem a bit drier. I love the weight of fruit here, and it’s in a good place, with some nice texture and structure melding well with the sweetness. 92/100

Ramos Pinot Vintage Port 1997 Douro, Portugal
20% alcohol. This is mellow and harmonious. Rich and quite dense with a minty, spicy edge to the sweet berry and black fruits. It has a mellow mid-palate with smooth fruity notes surrounded by a bit of peppery, herby, spicy complexity. The mint notes add freshness, but the core is well integrated, rich fruit. Drinking really well now. Raisinx, blackberries, cherries and spice. 94/100

Ramos Pinto Vintage Port 1995 Douro, Portugal
20% alcohol. This is powerful and quite structured even at age 25. It shows lush, concentrated blackberry and black cherry fruit, with some firm, grippy structure. There are notes of olive and tar, with some spice. It’s rich, but there is also nice freshness here. Such concentration with lovely rich integrated black fruit, spice and worked soils. So rich and ebjoyable but with some seriousness. 95/100
