Highlights: Great Heart Red Blend 2019 Swartland, South Africa

I really like this initiative from Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines in South Africa. Great Heart is a staff empowerment project, making four wines, and a portion of the sales go to them. This wine is lovely, combining drinkability with seriousness.

Great Heart Red Blend 2019 Swartland, South Africa
This is one of a pair of wines that are a staff empowerment project at Mullineux, where the workers have ownership and share the profits. A blend of 51% Syrah with 34% Tinta Barocca (which does really well in the Swartland) and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is really impressive. It has floral aromas of red cherries and plums, with a hint of pepper spice and fine meaty, sappy complexity. On the palate it is massive drinkability: it is midweight, fresh and expressive with lovely balanced, elegant sweet cherry and berry fruits. This has lovely fruit purity and a real elegance: such an expressive, balanced, drinkable red with enticing floral fruit. 92/100 (On sale now at £10.99 Waitrose, normal price £14.99)
