2023: the year in pictures
Quite a bit of travel in 2023, and some great memories. It was also the year I published my new book, and moved to the Docklands in London!
JANUARY
Just one trip in January: a quick one to Arnhem (NL) for some filming with Klaas de Jong of winemasters tv.
FEBRUARY
Tel Aviv for two talks at the IPEVO conference in Tel Aviv, and a day trip to Jerusalem.
Portugal: for Simplesmente Vinho and then visits in Vinho Verde
MARCH
Athens for Oenorama, plus visits to several Greek vineyards
Off to Oregon and California: gigs with the effervescent Evan Goldstein in Newburg and San Francisco
Back again to California, this time for a conference with Jackson Family Wines in Sonoma, followed by a few days in the Anderson Valley
Then another US trip: to Syracuse, New York State, for the BEV NY conference.
APRIL
Off to the Tejo for a few days of visits and tastings. Always good to be back in Portugal. This is Santarém, the main town in the region.
Back in the Rhône for the Descouvertes – a great chance to explore the wines of both the south and north
April is always IWC month, with 10 days of hardcore wine judging.
MAY
Bairrada for Baga day: a chance to visit wineries and taste a lot of Baga!
Exploring Penedes and Cava
A few days in Piemonte, lecturing and also touring around and eating and drinking well
JUNE
A couple of days in Copenhagen, lecturing and eating and drinking
Off to the Finger Lakes in New York State for the FLXcursion, a wonderful celebration of Riesling and other varieties grown here with some nice international visitors
In Wiesbaden for the IMW Symposium, on a panel on Regenerative Viticulture
JULY
In Rioja for the World’s Best Vineyards tour
Beaujolais: so good to be back for a lovely trip here
Off to Hungary to judge wine, and also a chance to catch up with the Borett portfolio
AUGUST
To Bourgogne: including the Auxerrois, the Côte Chalonnaise and a focus on Aligoté
To Texas for TexSom, where I did a seminar with Elaine Brown
SEPTEMBER
Austria and the single-vineyard summit at Graffeneg, plus a visit to the Wachau for more of the same
My first time in Etna! The Etna summit was great.
The Centre Loire in France: a great visit, including time with François Dal, the wine scientist
OCTOBER
A week in Tuscany, taking a deep dive into Chianti Classico. Also, my first visits to Sienna and Firenze!
Alsace: a great trip with colleague Lars Daniels from the Netherlands.
NOVEMBER
The Cava symposium in Barcelona was an excellent event. I got to meet fellow speaker Marco Simonit, too!
South Africa for a holiday, but also a little bit of work. A beautiful trip.
DECEMBER
In Osaka, Japan for the Japanese Wine Expo, plus some really good eating and drinking, including a meal in Tokyo on the way home
Finally in 2023, a trip to Lech in the Austrian alps for the Arlberg Weinberg festival
