Highlights: Lourens Family Wines Lindi Carien 2022 Western Cape, South Africa

Found this wine on the shelf at the Kew branch of the excellent Good Wine Shop. After a walk on the river from Twickenham to Kew and another visit to the gardens, it was great to find out that you can buy a bottle, pay £10 corkage, and then drink it in store (or just outside) with a small selection of cold food. And a bottle is just the right serve for two mid-afternoon on a Sunday after walking 18 km. It’s from Franco Lourens, who I’ve tasted with before in South Africa, and it’s £30 on the shelf, £40 to drink in.

Lourens Family Wines Lindi Carien 2022 Western Cape, South Africa
13% alcohol. 52% Chenin, 27% Verdelho, 13% Colombar, 4% Grenache Blanc, 3% Palomino. Naturally made, but lightly filtered. Quite full yellow colour. Complex layers of taut lemon, lime and yellow plum with a keen acid line, and then a hint of toast around the fringes. Bright and energetic with a chalky mineral layer under the fruit. Lovely energy here with purity and precision, with potential for development. 94/100
