Highlights: Niki Hills Winery Hatsuyuki Kerner 2022 Hokkaido, Japan

Hokkaido is a very interesting wine region in Japan, with a particular emphasis on low-intervention wines, and as well as Pinot Noir, one of the key local grapes is Kerner. This is a beautiful example.

12.5% alcohol. Delicate aromatics of lemon, oyster shell and honeysuckle lead to a nuanced palate showing delicate citrus fruit, a touch of yellow plum, some white peach and then a really beautiful finely spiced, slightly saline edge. There’s such purity and balance to this wine. So refined and expressive with amazing mouthfeel. This is one of the best Japanese whites I’ve tasted, and I’ve tasted quite a few. 94/100
