Querciabella Batàr 2022 IGT Blanco Toscana, Italy
14% alcohol. Since 1988 Querciabella have made this ‘supertuscan’ white, which is a barrel-fermented blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco (50/50 each). The Chardonnay comes from galestro-rich soils of Casaocci Sud (350 m) and Il Pallonaio (600 m), both south-facing. The Pinot Bianco is from northern-facing, cooler sites at 400 m, with weathered galestro making clay and schist. This was a very hot vintage, saved by some autumn rains. This is a rich, textural white with bold lemon, pear and even peach fruit, with a hint of incense and some lovely spicy undercurrents. There’s an innate richness and ripeness here, but also some mineral tension, with a long mineral and acid-laden finish. This should age beautifully, like many of the Batàrs of the past. 94/100
