Highlights: Catena Criolla Vino Natural Ancestral 2020 Mendoza, Argentina

Criolla is the name used for the pale-red-skinned generously yielding old grape varieties from Argentina, that are now being given more serious treatment. Good to see Catena championing them like this.

Catena Criolla Vino Natural Ancestral 2020 Mendoza, Argentina
13% alcohol. Matured for 8 months in clay, on skins, no added sulfites. It’s orange/pink in colour, with a lovely freshness and harmony: the tannins have softened a lot, and aren’t really present. Notes of mandarin and cherry with some sweet rhubarb notes in the background with a nice acid line, and a sleekness and suppleness that’s really attractive. Fine and linear, and finishing slightly salty. Some ripe apple notes in the mix too. Stylish stuff. 93/100 (£23 Harrods in the UK)
