Highlights: two from Sauternes

A couple of half-bottle Sauternes popped tonight. So satisfying and massively undervalued right now.

Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes 1er Cru 2005 Bordeaux, France
14% alcohol. Full yellow in colour. This is rich and unctuous with sweet peach, pear and nectarine fruit. Luscious and quite creamy with some vanilla notes and a lovely weight on the palate. Has some savoury character as well as the sweet fruitiness. Drink this soon, I reckon. Rich and generous. 92/100

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey Sauternes 2003 Bordeaux, France
13.5% alcohol. Gold/amber in colour. This has an enticing nose of marmalade and spice with some honey and crystalline fruits. Concentrated and very sweet on the palate showing exotic apricot, lemon and melon notes. Viscous with good acidity and spicy framing offsetting the very rich, sweet fruit. Such an impressive wine, with amazing complexity and balance. Drink now while it’s peaking. 94/100
