Highlights: Fontodi Dino Chianti Classico 2020
Had this beauty from the wine list at Manteca with good friends.
Fontodi Dino Chianti Classico 2020 Italy
This is Fontodi’s amphora wine. This is a special selection of Sangiovese. The vineyards this is sourced from are in the bottom of the valley with very cold nights, so there is high diurnal temperature variation. The Pietraforte soils give tannins that are a bit finer. This is vinified and fermented in unlined amphorae of 400-500 litres, which are fired at 950 C – like it was made in the past. They make the amphorae because they’ve been making tiles for 400 years as a family. The wine itself is fleshy and expressive with lovely sweet black cherry and plum fruit, as well as some fine spiciness. It’s supple and fine with red cherries, plums and a hint of tar. There’s nice tension here to the sweet red berry fruit and a stony, mineral dimension. Quite pure and bright, and really lovely. 95/100
