Highlights: Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2022 Martinborough, New Zealand

Website: https://atarangi.co.nz/

Ata Rangi are one of New Zealand’s top producers, and were one of the pioneers of the Martinborough region in the Wairarapa. I’ve visited a couple of times (there’s a report from my last visit here)

This is the latest release of their celebrated Pinot Noir.

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2022 Martinborough, New Zealand
13.5% alcohol. This is taut and quite complex, offering some sweet cherry and berry fruit, but also some tarry, grippy characters with stony minerality. It’s fresh and slightly reductive, with dried herbs and focused berry fruit, as well as wet stone and a bit of struck flint in the mix. There’s a lot going on here: a beautifully focused mid-weight Pinot with lots of potential for development, but if you have this wine, hold onto it for a few years before broaching. It’s sort of grippy and slightly unfurled right now, but it’s quite beautiful. 94/100
