Exploring Swedish wine (10) Flädie Mat & Vingård
Website: https://fladiematvingard.se/en/
Flädie Mat & Vingård is located just outside Lund. It and old farm that was first built in 1817. In 2003 restaurateur Nils-Bertil Hansson transformed this into a hospitality and conference centre, popular for weddings and hotel stays. His son Martin took over the company and planted vines here in 2007, making the first two vintages in a wine cooperative before opening the winery in 2012. There are 3 hectares, with around 9000 vines, half of which are Rondo with the balance Solaris and a bit of Phoenx and Cabernet Cortis. Farming is organic.
In 2020 Coronovirus hit the hospitality sector and bankruptcy followed. Håkan & Carina Wikholm purchased Flädie, and they have joined the wine business with their own vineyard, also in Skåne, called Assmåsa. They planted 20 000 vines there in 2018 on 7 hectares, but only half of this vineyard is in production. So some of the wines are blends of the two vineyards, and others come from either of the two. They are not yet sure whether the Assmåsa wines, made here, will have a separate identity or not.
Winemaking is now in the hands of new arrival Gonçalo Santos, who’s from Portugal and was most recently working in the Algarve.
THE WINES
Flädie Vingård Ebbe Rondo Rosé 2019 Sweden
Traditional method with 8 g/l dosage. Fruity and bright with a nice sappy edge to the lemon and pear fruit with some cherry notes. Bright with good energy and nice acidity. 88/100
Flädie Vingård Lepores Red NV Sweden
This is a multivintage blend of Cabernet Cortis and Rondo, blended from bits and pieces found in the winery after the last winemaker left. Mix of stainless steel and American oak. Green leafy nose with some spicy blackcurrant fruit. Supple palate shows a sweet core of berry fruits with some spicy notes. Robust but also has freshness, with nice spiciness. 88/100
Flädie Vingård Midnattssol NV Sweden
14.5% alcohol. A blend of 2020 and 2021 (both oaked) with some unoaked 2022 added to remove some of the oaky character. It’s still oaky, with a cerdary, spicy edge to the citrus and pear fruit with nice acidity and fine spiciness. Complex and layered with nice brightness. 90/100
Flädie Vingård Four Barrels Barrique 2023 Sweden
Nice fruit presence here: pure with some pretty pear and peach notes, as well as good acidity. Quite floral with nice depth of flavour, showing some spiciness on the finish. Easy and approachable, with sweet fruit the main theme. 88/100
Flädie Vingård Aniara Barrique 2019 Sweden
Sweetly aromatic with some spice, marmalade and melon, combining sweet and savoury. The palate is fresh and expressive with nice acidity and some complex toast and wood notes, with keen acidity on the finish. Nicely complex with a savoury twist to the well balanced fruit, finishing with some vanilla sweetness. 90/100
Flädie Vingård Aniara Renässans 2023 Sweden
Solaris with 6% Muscaris, in stainless steel. Ripe and textural with a grippy edge to the lovely fruit. Supple pear and peach, with a touch of cherry. There’s a nice bitter edge that offsets the fruit. Stylish. 91/100
