Highlights: Mitchelton Cabernet Shiraz 1973 Goulburn Valley, Victoria, Australia
This is a remarkable wine. On the night before the Pinot Massif event that brought 40-odd winemakers together at Mitchelton (in the Goulburn Valley in Victoria) for a two-day workshop on Pinot Noir, Michael Dhillon (of iconic winery Bindi in the Macedon Ranges) bought along this wine that was served blind. It was the first wine made at Mitchelton by Colin Preece. In 1974 Bill Dharshan Dhillon Singh, Michael’s dad, came to Mitchelton and bought some wine. Ever since then it has sat in the Dhillon cellar, and came out to play at age 51, at the place of its birth, which is super cool. My notes here were taken blind, so there’s no nostalgia vote. It was a really good wine.

Warm, mature, rich and harmonious with some development. It’s really elegant with subtle herbs, a nice warmth and real elegance. This is beautifully expressive with massive drinkability. It’s not a big wine, but it’s still drinking really well at 50 years old, and not only has it survived, it has also gained a beautiful harmony and elegance, and still has some fruit. A lovely piece of vinous history. 95/100
