Restaurants: Singburi, amazing Thai food in Shoreditch, London, and a short but great wine list

Popped into Singburi in Shoreditch this afternoon for a late lunch. Came away full, happy and itching to go back.

London has quite a reputation for Thai cuisine these days. There’s the famed Anglothai (I’ve yet to go), and then Smoking Goat, which is brilliant (and has a great wine list: last time I went Claus Preisinger was on by the glass). Singburi also has a top reputation, and on today’s showing it lived up to it.

The dining room is bright, modern and simple, and there’s a long kitchen counter/bar, which is the best place to sit. You get to see every dish being created in front of you, and it’s a cooking over coals sort of place where even the burners the woks are on are coal-fired.

The menu is short and changes daily, with a limited number of options. The four we chose were all excellent, and you could do the whole thing with a group of four or five hungry people.

The drinks list is really good. Again, short, but brilliantly chosen, and fairly priced. The wine list is excellent, and sourced from the right people. The three wines we tried by the glass were sourced from Roland Wines and Les Caves de Pyrene. So organic, low intervention is the theme, but at a friendly price point. There is also the option for corkage, which s £33. That’s a decent amount: it puts off those just looking to save money, and you don’t feel bad for the restaurant if you take up the option.

What we ate:

Amazing chicken and pork belly, then an astonishingly good grilled pollock and possibly the best aubergine dish on earth.

What we drank:

Antonio Pedro Toto Barbadillo Espumoso de Albariza 2022 Spain
Fizz from Barbadillo in Sherry country. Palomino and Chardonnay. Fruity and bright and really pure.balanced and delicious. Rounded with cherry and lemon finishing chalky. This is lovely. 90/100 (Supplier Les Caves de Pyrene, £49 per bottle)

Christina Gelber Muskateller 2025 Carnuntum, Austria
From Christina Netzl, this is a lovely friendly orange wine. Skin fermented, five weeks on skins, aged in 500 litre vats. Floral and grapey with nice weight and good structure. Has some pear and table grape fruit. Grippy finish. 92/100 (supplier Roland Wines, £56 per bottle)

Domaine de la Pepière Muscadet de Sevre et Maine Sur Lie 2025 Loire, France
Stony textured and fruity with green apple and citrus fruit. So lovely. 92/100 (supplier Les Caves de Pyrene, £43 per bottle)
