Highlights: Alte Vogtei Spätburgunder 2018 from Baden – amazing value

I’m often reviewing fancy wines here. So it’s nice to find a wine for the people – in this case, a little gem from the wine range of discounter Lidl. Sadly it’s not available online (they only sell in store), but if you have a Lidl near you, it’s worth tracking this down. [They also have some really good affordable Mosel Riesling.]

This wine is made by Weingut Burg Ravensberg in Baden (their website is www.weingut-burg-ravensburg.de/)

Alte Vogtei Zu Ravensburg Spatburgunder 2018 Baden, Germany
12.5% alcohol
£6.99 Lidl
This organic Pinot Noir has a good concentration of ripe berry fruit, with freshness and structure. The focus is all on the fruit, and there are some nice floral cherry notes playing a supporting role, as well as an appealing meaty hint. Full flavoured, and maybe a little rustic, but really enjoyable, showing ripeness and volume in the mouth. Staggering value for money: this is a proper wine. 90/100
