Video: with Filipa Pato in her old vineyards in Bairrada, Portugal, which she farms with the help of pigs
Filipa Pato began making her own wines in 2001, starting with three rented plots. Since then she and her husband William Wouter have been acquiring vineyards, some of them more than 100 years old. These are mostly planted with the red grape Baga, and she now has 20 hectares spread over 37 different plots, which are farmed biodynamically. I spent some time visiting a few of these amazing vineyards with her and one of her US importers Steve Meier. She has been using pigs to regenerate the vineyards with great success.
